30 Welcome Email Subject Lines, Scored Against the Rules That Actually Matter

3 min read

A welcome email gets the best open rate of anything you'll ever send - and most of them waste it on "Welcome to the newsletter!" A subject line in a welcome sequence has a specific job per stage: get the delivery opened, make day two feel worth opening, keep momentum through the week. Here are 30, grouped by stage, with the rules that make them work.

The five rules behind all of them

  1. Name the thing. "Your templates are inside" beats "A special gift for you" because the reader knows exactly what opening buys them.
  2. Specific beats clever. Numbers, timeframes, and concrete nouns earn opens. Wordplay earns nothing from someone who met you four minutes ago.
  3. Short survives the inbox. Most phones cut subject lines around 40 characters. Front-load the words that matter.
  4. Match the email. A subject line that overpromises gets one open and costs you the next five.
  5. Sound like a person. If it could be an ad, it reads as an ad.

Delivery (day 0) - the job: get the freebie opened

  1. Your templates are inside
  2. Here's your [thing] - as promised
  3. Got it: your [thing] + what happens next
  4. The [thing] you asked for
  5. Starting with the good part: [thing] inside
  6. [Thing] delivered. One tip before you open it

Quick win (day 1) - the job: prove opening you pays off

  1. Ten minutes, one result
  2. Do this one thing to your [thing] today
  3. The line everyone skips (and shouldn't)
  4. Yesterday was the map. Today is the first step
  5. A 15-minute win before your coffee goes cold
  6. Steal my first step

Story (day 3) - the job: turn a sender into a person

  1. I had 200 subscribers and nothing to say
  2. The Sunday night that broke me
  3. Why I almost quit [topic]
  4. What I got wrong about [topic] for a year
  5. The email that changed how I do this
  6. A confession and a lesson

Value (day 5) - the job: teach something worth the open

  1. The question I get most, answered
  2. How to know what to send next week
  3. The [topic] mistake almost everyone makes
  4. What I'd do with zero subscribers
  5. The 4-email rotation that ends blank-page panic
  6. Read this before your next send

Bridge (day 7) - the job: open the next chapter honestly

  1. What to expect from me
  2. The templates are the map
  3. Thursday is when the real emails start
  4. One question before the welcome week ends
  5. The full system, if you want it
  6. Where we go from here

Generate your own with AI - then test them

The workflow: paste any line above into your AI tool with your actual details - what you deliver, who your reader is, your topic - and ask for ten variations under 40 characters. AI is fast at variations; it's bad at knowing which one is true to your email. That judgment is yours: delete anything that promises more than the email delivers.
